UPPER LIMB ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON

Mr Ben Dowdle is an Australian trained orthopaedic surgeon working in Melbourne. He specialises in upper limb surgical reconstruction managing all hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder problems.

BEN DOWDLE

Mr Ben Dowdle is an Australian trained orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in upper extremity reconstruction. He manages the full spectrum of upper limb conditions, including hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder problems.

 

Ben graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2010 with first class honours. After completing internship and residency at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, he commenced orthopaedic surgery training in 2016. He attained his Fellowship with Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2020.

 

Ben has completed a further two years of subspecialty training in upper extremity reconstructive surgery. This included post-fellowship education and training (PFET) in hand, wrist and microsurgery with the Australian Hand Surgery Society. This training was under supervision of Professor Randy Bindra and Professor Mark Ross, two of Australia’s leading hand and wrist surgeons.

 

Ben has particular interest in advanced arthroscopic (key-hole) techniques, joint replacement surgery and upper limb trauma. He has public hospital appointments at the Alfred, Sandringham and Frankston hospitals, where he helps to train the next generation of surgeons. He works privately at Linacre Hospital and Peninsula Private Hospital.

 

Ben is an active member of the Bayside community, where he lives with his wife and two young children.

HAND

Using microscopes and precision instruments, Mr Dowdle can repair complex hand injuries or disorders resulting from trauma or disease. Microsurgery allows him to repair the delicate nerves and blood vessels of the hand. He can repair tendons and bones in the hand for optimal functionality.

WRIST

Mr Dowdle treats the full spectrum of wrist conditions, including arthritis, sports injuries and fractures. He is trained in arthroscopic (key-hole) techniques to treat a variety of wrist pathologies. As an orthopaedic hand and wrist surgeon, Mr Dowdle has extensive experience in joint replacement surgery

ELBOW

Ranging from the minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery to the complex open surgery, Mr Dowdle focuses on a variety of conditions affecting the elbow joint, including fractures, ligament injuries, arthritis, or nerve compression. His priority is to restore function, reduce pain and improve mobility of the elbow.

SHOULDER

Ranging from the minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery to extensive open shoulder surgery, Mr Dowdle can repair or replace damaged structures in the shoulder caused by injuries or conditions including rotator cuff tears, shoulder arthritis, dislocations, or fractures that affect the joint's function and mobility.
